The sitter is traditionally identified as Therwagne de Mericourt, a female hero of the French Revolution. She participated in the walk to Versailles to force King Louis XVI and his family to return to Paris, and she purpotedly was involved in the taking the Bastille on 14 July 1789. Ausgustin mentioned in his Journal that he drew a portrait of her.
A comparable drawing, of approximately the same size, and of the same provenance, was sold at Christie's Monaco, 20 June 1992, lot 280. The later drawing was drawn on the verso of a self-portrait related to two miniatures. In preparation for his miniatures Augustin often executed large chalk drawings such as the present one. Further drawings by Augustin are in the Louvre and in the Muse d'Ixelles, Brussels.
The present drawing will be included in the catalogue raisonn of the works by the artist prepared by Madame de Coincy de Saint-Palais and Monsieur Bedouret.
