The year 1825 was a grim one for Patrick Brontë, his two eldest children, Maria and Elizabeth, dying on 6 May and 15 June at the ages of 11 and 10 of tuberculosis contracted at the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge. Patrick Brontë's burial certificate for Martha Constantine on 18 September 1856 is also known to survive (auction, Smythe, 13 November 1996, lot 401).
