Mainz Carnival Tarock, 1839, Darmstadt, Maxmilliam Frommann (?), 58 of 78 cards, (includes eighteen trumps, I to III, V to XII, XV to XXI, eleven courts, valet of spades, queen, cavalier and valet of hearts and clubs, and king, queen, cavalier and valet of diamonds, and twenty-nine pips), etchings on trumps, stencil-colored lithography on courts, stencil-colored pips. Trumps have double-ended Roman numerals with different views and captions, trump I displays carnival figures and MAINZ CARNIVAL 1839, remaining trumps are named views of European towns mainly in Germany, such as II Darmstadt/Homburg v. d. H, and also Bern, Lausanne, etc. Courts are double-ended, unnamed, and the engravings differ from the other Mainz Carnival Tarock deck in this catalog, French suits, no indices, square corners. Backs are overall pattern of dots in red. Size 4 3/16 in (10.5 cm.) high, 2 5/16 in.5.8 cm.). Slightly worn, small ink spot on corner of trump X, back of card has five rows of handwritten numbers.
