Tourist's Tarock, circa 1870, Graz, Ferdinand Pittner, 54 of 54 cards, chromolithography, ace of hearts contains Austrian monarchic tax stamp without indication of value (15 kreuzer, valid 1858-1881), duty tax office number 128, and FERD. PITTNER in GRAZ. Trumps, except 0 renumbered and I, are horizontal full length scenes of Steyer (Styria) with caption identification, Roman numerals and court cards are double ended, kings have crowns over the suit mark and, along with the jacks of clubs and diamonds, gently caricature tourists, the other courts show natives as guides and cooks, king of spades reads, "Mit Vorbehalt des Nachdruckes," jack of clubs reads, FERDINAND PITTNER in GRAZ, French suits, square corners, no indices, square corners. Backs are overall moire pattern in raspberry red. Size 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) high, 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) wide. Faint browning, otherwise in generally fine condition. Kaplan II, 460.
