Needlework Playing Card Box. France(?), circa mid-19th century.
6 x 8.5 x 3 in. (152 x 220 x 77 mm). Ribbed-patterned paper over a wood frame with faux nail-headed gold paper trim and border and on all sides. The recessed top lid has a fine needlepoint design, on satin and under glass, of olive branches on one side, acorns and oak branches on the other side and a harp made of sequins and gold thread in the center. The interior is composed of a pull-out tray with four boxes underneath. Each box is decorated with a different embroidered floral design under glass and framed in gold paper.
