Lacquer playing card box, China, circa 1860.
6.5 x 12.5 x 4 in. (165 x 320 x 100 mm). Rectangular Chinese export box on wooden lion feet, wavy-shaped sides, rounded corners, lacquered in black and decorated in silver and gold on all four sides with a processional scene of an important person carried in a palanquin and accompanied by a retinue of musicians, and flag and sign bearers. The brass hinged lid rises to a plateau with curved outlines decorated with two friezes of dragons and flowers enclosing a motif of six Spanish playing cards of the Catalan pattern (3 of swords, 7 of clubs, jack of swords, cavalier of clubs, 5 of cups, 3 of coins). The inside of the lid is adorned with an ornament of bamboo and ferns, and the rims are patterned with scrolls in gold. The interior holds two boxes with hand painted lids, one with a man and the other a pheasant in a cartouche surrounded by flowers, and five matching trays with colored decor on silver background. Four trays depict Spanish suited aces and one tray features a cock. The box has lock and key hole plate, lacks key.
