Lot Essay

The decorative technique involved is known as tianqi (filled-in) where different lacquers colours had been applied to enhance details and contrast against the coloured ground.
Both the parrot design and the black background are unusual ; for examples of tianqi lacquers from the Wanli period see James C.Y. Watt and B. Brennan Ford, East Asian Lacquer, The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 1991, pl.51, 52 and 53
