The rectangular back embellished with carved tendrils and volutes flanked by scrolling molded and downswept arms embellished with carved tendrils, volutes and leaves and centering a conforming shaped seat, the whole on scrolled bracket feet decorated with applied leaf carving and carved scrolled volute supports, on carved animal paw front feet, minor cracks and seperation to veneer

The design source for this chair, of which Herter Brothers is attributed with several versions, is a Roman second century A.D. red marble commode chair. A more elaborate version of this chair was illustrated in the grand hall of the William H. Vanderbilt House in Artistic Houses (New York, 1883-84)
