The moulded arched hood with pierced sound frets to the frieze and sides surmounted by giltwood urn finials, the arched trunk door with glazed lenticle and gilt brass mount depicting the Rape of Europa, on a rectangular plinth with canted angles with scrolling knees and feet, the brass dial with engraved border and with foliate spandrels to a silvered and arcaded Roman and Arabic chapter ring signed Pieter Swaan/AMSTERDAM, matted centre with scroll engraving flanking a day of week sector engarved with figures and zodiac symbols, recessed seconds disc, elaborate silvered and engraved hands, the hour in the form of an angel, date aperture above 60, the silvered arch well engraved with a battle scene around a rolling moon, the eight day four pillar movement with anchor escapement and Dutch rack strike on two bells, lacking alarm work; pendulum, two brass weights, the engraving to the arch later probably circa 1770

Lot Essay
Pieter Swaan (probably bron 1670) was active during the end of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. His workshop was situated at the Leliegracht in Amsterdam.
