BROWNE, John (1642-ca 1700). Adenochoiradelogia: or, an Anatomick-Chirurgical Treatise of Glandules & Strumaes, or Kings-Evil-Swellings. 8o (175 x 106 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait and frontispiece of the "Royal Gift of Healing" by R. White. Contemporary dark red morocco, probably by the Queen Binders' B, covers tooled in gold to an all-over design of drawer-handle tools, pointillé volutes, solid and pointillé fleurons including a large tulip-flower tool, and dots, within a roll-tooled border, the drawer-handles, volutes and floral tools infilled with blank and green paint, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, the panels with central assemblage of small leaf tools picked out with black paint and framed by gilt volutes, edges gilt (hinges slightly cracked, some rubbing). FIRST EDITION of the best contemporary account of the practice of "touching for the King's evil" (scrofula) under the Stuarts, by Charles II's surgeon. Browne had given the first account of cirrhosis of the liver in 1685 and had been appointed by the King as surgeon to St. Thomas's Hospital in June 1683.
