[PERUVIAN DRAWINGS.] A group of 12 oil paintings on paper of Inca Kings. Possibly late 17th-18th century?

204 x 136 mm sheet sizes, Spanish watermarks, with legends beneath each image, each sheet mounted on heavier laid paper, modern matting, red quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: sold Parke Bernet, 23 March 1953, lot 110, Emil Offenbacher agent.

The style of the paintings strongly suggest that the artist was a native Peruvian; the manuscript identification may have been made by another hand, although the irregular spellings and penmanship may also be the work of an Indian. 14 reigning members of the Inca Dynasty have been identified by Peruvian scholars, and the 11 Kings and 1 Queen represented here include Manco Capac, the first Inca King, thought to have descended from the sun in the mythology. Another example of Peruvian artistry from this relative date is the work of Don Joan de Santacruz Pachacuti Yamoti, a Peruvian converted to Christianity who presented a history of his country to the King of Spain in 1620 (Relacion de Antiquedades de 'ste Reyno del Piru, ms. Bibl. Nac. in Madrid).
