180 x 115 mm. Manuscript on paper and vellum. 206 and 208 leaves, including watercolor drawings, pencil sketches, a decorated vellum binding sample, and numerous manuscript verses and comments in the hands of Ryssel's friends, see listing below.
Together 2 volumes, A DOS-À-DOS BINDING OF TWO DIFFERENT DESIGNS by the Bayreuth binder Johann Gottlieb Riedel, mentioned in this Album Amicorum, dated 25 March 1754. The first volume bound in gold-tooled painted vellum with an elaborate geometical design, the compartments filled with small tools, silk doublures and linings, decorated in gilt with a floral rool and central design, gilt lettered "Fecit Bayreuth DXXV. Marz MDCCLIV," the second volume bound in calf with a gilt border of fillets and various rool tools with floral designs, the center cover of vellum with a marbled gilt tooled design, silk doublures, gilt lettered "Nat. Scheberg DVIII May MDCCXXXIII C.H.v.R." all edges gilt, painted and gauffered (some light rubbing and staining). Provenance: Christian Heinrich von Ryssel; purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 25 May 1957.
AN INVALUABLE SOURCE FOR THE HISTORY OF BOOKBINDING IN SOUTHERN GERMANY: A "STAM-BUCH" BY A BOOKBINDING APPRENTICE with most of the entries by fellow bookbinders. The earliest entries are from 1754, the latest from 1772. Ryssel's journey took him to Bayreuth, Bamberg, Kulmbach, Hof, Frankfurt,Manheim, and other places, he befriended binder's from many cities including Dresden, Halle, Göttingen, Stockholm, and Breslau.
