[ITALIAN PAINTED BOARDS.] L'Ecco Che Forma Dalla Fama, Che Rimbomba Le Glorie Immortali, Dell'Illmo. et Eccmo. Senatore Francesco Grimani.
282 x 218 mm. 8 leaves. 23 lines. Text within orange and yellow border. Contemporary Italian boards, painted with large multi-colored arms of the dedicatee Senator Francesco Grimani on both sides.
A lavish testimonial in praise of a long serving Senator by an anonymous author, who claims he "has none of the spirit of Cicero," yet "I will appeal to the notoriety of your fame, as the panegyrist has already done, not just in this province, but in all of the Universe, proclaiming your immortal greatness..." In 1753 Grimani (1702-1779) was appointed Provveditore Generale in Dalmatia and Albania and in 1757 became Provveditore Generale da Mar. He was sensitive towards the needs of the populations he ruled and studied their customs, which he described in the Quattro Relazioni interessantissime circa lo stato delle Isole Jonieand in Anagrafi delle isole del Levante soggette al Dominio della Repubblica (1761). On their part, the subjects dedicated speeches and poems to him and had a medal struck in his honor. Between 1763 and 1764, Grimani was Captain and Vicepodest of Brescia, and also published an account of the population and their customs (biographical details from arsantigua.com).
