[DURÁN, Diego (16th century). "Historia de las Indias de Nueva-España y isles de Tierra Firme." Spain, 19th century.]
2 volumes, 2o (301 x 210 mm). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. 1,264 leaves, written in a clerical Spanish hand. One full-page and 113 smaller watercolor illustrations. (Lower half of f.831 cut out.) 19th-century blue morocco, covers with wide gilt border, arms in gilt at center, spine gilt-lettered and -decorated, edges gilt, by Hering. Provenance: Edward Kingsborough, Viscount (1795-1837, binding, his sale 1 November 1842); Sir Thomas Phillips (1792-1872, his mss. no. 11639); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 1952.
A fine manuscript copy of Father Diego Durán's celebrated history of Mexico, composed in the late 16th century and illustrated with a great number of watercolors of iconographic import. The original is at the Biblioteca Real de Madrid, and a number of copies made prior to its eventual publication in 1867-80 are known to have been made. It is most likely that the present copy was made for Lord Kingsborough, who published an important work on the antiquities of Mexico, Antiquities of Mexico, Comprising Facsimiles of Ancient Mexican Paintings and Hieroglyphics, 1830-38. The present copy was sold at his sale in 1842 and was purchased by Sir Thomas Phillips. (2)
