4o (257 x 198 mm). Title with vignette of Godthaab, leaf of contents and 40 woodcuts on 25 leaves, numbers 1, 2 and 5 in both colored and uncolored state, the last plate double-page and colored. Contemporary red cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover. Provenance: Erik Halved (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of this striking series of woodcuts by Greenlanders. The title in the Kalâtdlisut dialect of the Greenland Eskimo language and in Danish; introductory text in Danish; some illustration captions in Kalâtdlisut. The woodcuts, numbered 1-39 and one unnumbered at end, were drawn and cut by Greenlanders. Nos. 1-9 deal with the social life and customs of the Eskimos, nos. 10-39 with their legends and folk-lore. The book is the result of an experiment conducted by Hinrich Rink (1819-1893), crown inspector for southern Greenland. Many of the illustrations were done by Aron of Kangeq (Âlut Kangermio, 1822-1869), whose initials appear in the book. Rasmus Berthelsen's (1827-1901) initials also appear in the book. Some of the illustrations also appeared in Grönlandske folkesagn. The copy in the Wilberforce Eames Indian Collection at NYPL also has the first two plates in duplicate (colored and uncolored); though here the fifth plate is also in duplicate.
