LAHR, Gen. Lieut. Versuch über die Anwendung der Minen im Belagerungs Kriege oder Militairischer theil der Minirkunst... Zweite mit Zisaeten vermehrte und verbesserte Auflage, 1798. Berlin: Lithogr. Institut d. Berliner Kriegsministeriums, 1817.
2 volumes, 4o (260 x 215 mm). I: 10ff, 337 pp. II: 3ff, 352 pp., 2ff. 29 folding lithographic plates. Contemporary German mottled paper boards, red morocco lettering pieces (some light wear to extremities). Provenance: purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 11 May 1956.
A REMARKABLE LITHOGRAPHIC RARITY. Lahr's manuscript treatise on military engineering, totaling more than 700 pages, is entirely reproduced in lithography. It is the first publication of the Lithographic Institute of the Prussian Ministry of War, which ran the earliest permanent lithographic press in Berlin. Ludwig von Reiche (1775-1854), founder of the press, gives in his Introduction a detailed description of the procedures used in the production of the plates (engraving on stone, pen drawing, chalk drawing, etc.) and of the text. He also provides the names of the lithographers employed. This is certainly one of the most extensive, if not the most extensive, book produced lithographically at this early date. See J. Aufsesser, "Die Entwicklung der kuensterischen Lithographie in Berlin," in Zeitschrift für Bücherfreunde IV (1900), pp. 288-96. (2)
