WILLIAM BLAEU (1571-1638)
Asia noviter delineata. [Amsterdam: 1640]. Engraved map, hand-coloured in outline, 490 x 580mm. French text on verso, borders decorated with 20 costumed figures in pairs, 9 bird's-eye views of towns in upper border, the seas decorated with sea-monsters and galleons. (Light spotting to margins, left and right margins slightly shaved).
ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS DECORATIVE MAPS OF ASIA. From 1633, members of the Blaeu family were the official cartographers to the V.O.C. and therefore had access to the most up-to-date cartographic information regarding South East Asia. The map features an upper border depicting nine of the main cities and trading settlements of the continent including Goa, Damascus, Jerusalem and Macao. The classic Northeast Passage is shown and a highly speculative and incomplete north east coast of Asia opposite an equally-conjectural segment of North America. cf. Tibbetts 75.
