NICOLAS DE FER (1647-1720)
L'Asie, divisee selon le tendue de ses principales parties. Paris: 1696. [Borders dated 1696-98]. Engraved wallmap of Asia on four sheets, hand-coloured in outline, with French letterpress borders 'Description de l'Asie' and title above overall size (with borders), 1140 x 1650mm. The map, surmounted with a decorative title cartouche, dedication to the Dauphin dated 1696 in cartouche at upper left, inset detailed maps of Samojede and two of northeast China, elaborate engraved borders decorated with vignettes of the peoples of Asia: Chinois, Japonais, Turcs, Indiens, Tartares, Phillipines, Arabes, Mongoliens, Georgiens, Malayes, Siamois and Cochinchinois, the letterpress outer borders comprising four sheets pasted around titled 'Description de l'Asie par N. de Fer' dated Paris, 1696. Upper letterpress title on two sections dated 1698, coloured in orange with pasted overlabel lettered 'L'Asie'. (Some light creasing along folds, very light browning to edges.)
A SPECTACULAR WALLMAP OF ASIA, by one of the foremost French cartographers of the late-17th century, encompassing the most decorative elements of French map making. In his early career, de Fer is better known for producing small atlases on Europe and France but in 1690 he became the official geographer to the Dauphin, later geographer to the French and Spanish kings. In the 1690s under the Dauphin's patronage he issued a series of wallmaps for the nobility of France; in his lifetime some 26 wallmaps were issued. This 1696 wallmap of Asia, the first issue, is particularly striking, dedicated to the Dauphin and including the rare letterpress historical description.
