An attractive map of the French attack on Madras in 1758, probably a preparatory sketch for that published in vol. 2 of Robert Orme's History of the Military Transactions of the British Nation in Indostan from the Year MDCCXLV, London, 1763-78. During the War of Coromandel, the French forces under the Comte de Lally, were sent out by the French government in 1758 to drive the English out of India. He captured Fort St David and occupied Madras from December 1758 until February 1759, but retreated when an English fleet appeared off the coast. Madras had previously been captured and occupied by the French from 1746-48 but was restored to Britain by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle.
