Lot Essay

Chinnery left Bristol in 1795 and settled in Dublin, where he lodged with a jeweller, James Vigne, and painted several members of the Vigne family, including Maria Vigne, whom Chinnery married in 1799. The present watercolour bears a resemblance to a portrait of Maria Vigne in the collection of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (for which see G.R. Tillotson, Fan Kwae Pictures, London, 1987, p.2, fig.1).
