'Plates 73 [see the following lot] and 74 depict the children of Neil Benjamin Edmonstone, Member of the Supreme Council and one of the most powerful individuals in India. ... Chinnery's portraits of childr en often have a particular charm, but he had little opportunity to prac tise this genre when he moved to the China coast, where very few wes tern children were to be found.'
