AMERICAN BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS FOR FOREIGN MISSIONS

Map of China published by the A.B.C.F.M. Boston: 1888. Lithographic wallmap of China, printed on two cotton sheets, loosely joined, overall 180 x 143cm, wash outline to regional boundaries, small felt patches stitched on indicating named mission stations, the map showing the principal rivers, towns and regions, each region with population figures marked. (Some light discolouration of linen.)

An interesting Missionary map of China, showing the position of 12 ABCFM Mission stations as of 1888, 9 concentrated around Peking, 2 in Fuh-kien and one in Hong Kong, the map presumably used for administrative purposes by a mission in China. The population count for China as marked on this map totals 302 million. The ABCFM was founded in 1810 as the first American Christian foreign mission agency, sailing first to Calcutta in 1812. The first Chinese mission opened in Canton in 1830 in response to a request by the British missionary Robert Morrison (for whom see lot 106) and was maintained until 1866. It reopened in 1883.
