A rare Charles II silver and turtleshell piqué paircased verge pocket watch
John Knibb, Oxford, No. 56. Circa 1685
The silver champlevé dial with Roman and Arabic chapters, blued steel beetle and poker hands (later hour hand), foliate dial centre, the movement with gilt-brass plates with pierced Egyptian pillars, signed on the top plate John Knibb att Oxon, foliate pierced and engraved balance cock with open foot, silver regulation disc (I-IIII), verge escapement with plain three-arm steel balance, chain fusee and spring barrel, inner case plain with split bezel, maker's mark SB for Samuel Bontell and punch-numbered 56, shuttered winding hole, the outer case veneered with turtleshell and further decorated with a silver foliate inlaid radial pattern, inhabited with doves and flower heads and with further piqué work to the outer band, the inside pasted with a rare paper table showing the saints' days, the dates of the four states of the moon and the equation of time - all in December
