Signed Yoshisuke saku, Muromachi Period (16th Century)
Sugata [configuration]: honzukuri with iorimune, fumbari, sakizori with a chu-kissaki
Kitae [forging pattern]: tight itamehada with some flowing grain and some areas of open grain and shirake
Hamon [tempering pattern]: suguha with variations
Boshi [tip]: komaru
Nakago [tang]: three holes, one plugged with copper and katte sagari file marks and ha-agari kurijiri
Habaki [collar]: gold covered double
Nagasa [length of blade from tip to beginning of tang]: 64.5cm
Koshirae [mounting]: in shirasaya and with a black lacquer katana koshirae, shakudo fuchi-kashira carved with dragons among waves with gold details, signed Seijo, shakudo menuki of hunters in iroezogan pursuing small game, the round iron tsuba has a cockerel on a thatched roof, and on the reverse bamboo grasses all inlaid in iroe takazogan, 19th century.

Lot Essay

Accompanied by a certificate of registration as Hozon Token [Sword Worthy of Preserving], no.372943, by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword], dated March 29 2006.
Shimada Yoshisuke (or Gisuke) of Suruga Province (present-day Shizuoka Prefecture) worked in the late Soshu style from around the 1520's, although late Bizen influence is seen on some of his blades. Yoshisuke II was also skilful in the Soshu style, and was followed by a number of later generations.
