The (now) two-tier box with recessed side handles, mother-of-pearl plaques to the front, one inscribed Montague R. White, brass bowl and gimbal, 98 mm. diameter silvered dial with 54-hour up/down ring and subsidiary seconds, gold hands, signed James McCabe/Royal Exchange London No.527, the reversed chain fusee movement with Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, cut bimetallic balance with cylindrical heat compensation weights and blued steel helical spring, the top plate with repeat signature -- 7 in. (17.75 cm.) square, the box; tipsy key, guard box
Provenance
Formerly on the Coral Princess, a passenger ship based out of Yokohama and carrying mainly Japanese passengers on holiday to South East Asia. Purchased in 1970 by the China Navigation Co. Ltd., the Coral Princess was previously Argentine-owned and called the Princesa Leopoldina. She was sold again in 1990.
