MILITARY INTEREST:- A VICTORIAN NOVELTY SILVER REGIMENTAL MESS CIGAR BOX MODELLED AS A DRUM,
MARK OF ALEXANDER MACRAE, LONDON, 1868,
Fitted with tension ropes & surmounted by a finial of musical trophies including a pair of drumsticks, mounted on 4 small castors, the front engraved with the badge of the 94th. Foot, the interior fitted with a screw-in divider forming 3 compartments, the hinged cover inscribed "Presented to Colonel Carmichael C.B. commanding and to his brother officers of Her Majesty's Ninety Fourth Regiment in grateful remembrance of much devoted loyalty, an even discipline, unfailing good fellowship, deep research, unceasing wit, and racy repartee, enjoyed in their society during thirty years of service by their devoted friend and well-wisher, Edward Smyth Mercer, Major, 94th. Regiment, 1 June, 1868" and further engraved "The sound of the drum oft ends with smoke, Though it help to drown a cry! But this wee drum resounds to no stroke. Pray me from its inmates try, Puff though you may faint, it will end with a joke While veterans leisurely fume with a sigh." 7¾ in. high (19.8 cm.), 6 in. diameter (15 cm.), gross weight 40 oz.

Further details
The 94th. Foot was first raised in 1802 but disbanded in 1818. The regiment was re-formed at Glasgow in 1823 employing those officers placed on half-pay at it's previous disbandment. In 1868 the regiment had just returned home from service in India where it had been since the latter part of 1857. In 1881, following the Cardwell reforms, the regiment became 2nd. Battalion, The Connaught Rangers.
