Further details
The Hereford, Hay-on-Wye & Brecon Railway line was built up the Wye Valley in stages. The first section was agreed by Act of Parliament on 8/8/1859 and opened initially for goods traffic only in 1862 between Hereford & Moorhampton, reaching Hay-on-Wye on 11/7/1864. It became known as the "Egg & Bacon Railway" because of the farm produce it used to bring into Hereford. Later on the line was taken over by the Midland Railway & eventually closed to passengers on 31/12/1962.
