Lot Essay

This type of 'Library Reading Chair', was invented by the Strand cabinet-makers, Messrs. Morgan and Sanders (R. Ackermann, Repository of Arts, September 1810, pl. 19). The pattern shows the chair with a moveable book-rest. It was described as one of 'the most convenient and comfortable library chairs perhaps ever completed' (P. Agius, Ackermann's Regency Furniture & Interiors, London, 1984, p. 54). A padouk armchair of this pattern was sold anonymously, in Christie's London, 5 November 1992, lot 76.
