Lot Essay

The design is a very conscious and careful attempt at reproducing the blue and white 'lotus bouquet' patterns found on early Ming dishes, and later copied during the Qing dynasty. It is quite rare to find a deliberate incised copy, rather than the more usual underglaze blue decoration. For an early Ming prototype, see the Xuande period dish in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Underglaze Blue and Red, Shanghai Museum, 1987, no. 135.
