Lot Essay

Originally this model was created by Johann Joachim Kändler, court sculptor to Frederick-Augustus I, Elector of Saxony and from 1733 the modellmeister at the Meissen Porcelain Factory. This particular model was created circa 1753, and shows the influences of the rococo style in the scrolling triform bases and dress of the courtiers, in particualr the frivolous manner inwhich the pawns adjust their hats.
