Lot Essay

The original inspiration for these large wall appliques is not immediately apparent although the influence by French designs is clear. See H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, for several eighteenth century variants, the closest being a drawing by Nicolas Pineau, no.2.11.8 and accompanying photograph no. 2.11.7, p. 140.
