When this work was published in the seminal 1972 Abrams catalogue on Husain, the illustration reflected the work in an unfinished state and is depicted as unsigned. Bartholomew and Kapur, the book's authors, titled the painting Lesbians. However, the composition thematically suggests that of an Amazonian warrior theme from classical Greek mythology.
Interestingly enough the 'shield' is in the shape of a palette board. Does the painting suggest a more complicated view on art and the sexes?
