Lot Essay

In creating the bridge of the Enterprise NX-01, production designer Herman Zimmerman was inspired by the work of Walter M. Jefferies. Zimmerman wanted his control room to reflect the sensibilities of Jefferies' original set, but with one major difference. He designed some consoles to face inward. This meant that in most scenes, the science officer and the chief engineer could also face inward, toward the captain, and (not coincidentally) toward the camera.
