Production designer Harold Michelson and art director Joseph Jennings faced a considerable challenge. They were responsible for updating the iconic Starship Enterprise. The original sets, built in the 1960s on a television budget, needed to be upgraded for the big screen. In particular, they needed to satisfy Gene Roddenberry's order to make the new ship more advanced and more realistic than before. These drawings represent their efforts to retain a family connection to the original ship, while taking full advantage of the larger budget and longer schedule offered by a major motion picture.
