Lucien Sandoz (1825-1896) of Le Locle was a renowned watchmaker who worked together with his son Alfred. At the prestigious National Exhibition of Horology in 1881 the firm won a Third Class Medal.

The tourbillon carriage of the present watch is a typical example of Auguste Grether's first type and its unusual, playful shape (see Reinhard Meis Das Tourbillon, p. 43, Z47 "Grether 1"). Auguste Grether (1817-1879) was a skilled watchmaker specializing in the manufacture of high precision parts and tourbillon carriages which he also supplied to renowned watch firms such as Girard-Perregaux and Paul Ditisheim.
