During the war, Sutherland pursued interests aside from his work as an Official War Artist. He illustrated two poetry books, the second being the May 1943 edition of Poetry London No. 9, which published Sutherland's illustrations to Francis Quarles' 1638 Hieroglyphikes on the Life of Man (see lot 201).
