Malthouse is best known for his work as a printmaker and painter. After studying at the Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts from 1931 to 1937 he began a career in teaching fine art himself, first at Salt High Schools, in Yorkshire, then at a higher level, as a lecturer at the Cardiff College of Art.
