Lot Essay

The present lot relates to a table service commissioned by Madame Temple of Regent Street, Brighton. Mr. Alderman Copeland 'expressly and exclusively' manufactured this service to her specification and design. The figures and baskets were modelled by William Beatie of London. See Paul Atterbury with Maureen Batkin, The Parian Phenomenon, Somerset, 1989, p. 173, fig. 567 for an illustration from the Art Journal Supplement of 1862. Also see The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of the International Exhibition 1862, p. 28 for an engraving illustrating four pieces from this service, including the present form.
