The pear-shaped ewer enamelled with a continuous garden scene depicting numerous groups of figures standing before a pavilion in conversation, one group gathered around promontory rockwork with scholar's objects, in the foreground chicken and sheep, between bands of shaped cartouches containing landscapes, birds and flowers, reserved on a gilt feathery ground, cover restored

Lot Essay

The term 'Mandarin' is used to refer to Chinese officials and was a very popular design in the Dutch province of Groningen. The shape of the coffee-pot is based on a German prototype (Saksisch model) from the period 1730 - 1750).
