INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR: 'Master George Domvile Wheeler with the affectionate and Christian regards of M M Sherwood 26th August 1819'. (The recipient, then aged four, was later the author of Marriage with a Deceased Wife's Sister not Contrary to God's Law, published in 1849.) With 19th-century pencilled notes, citing Locke and Jeremy Taylor, on front free endpaper. Also INSCRIBED BY SASSOON: 'To Philip Morrell with the most pious greetings from Siegfried Sassoon. Xmas 1921.'

Sassoon acquired the nickname 'Cyprian Oyde' -- 'cyprianoid' or carp-like -- at Garsington because he was always carping about small matters.
