THUCYDIDES. Thucydides translated into English to which is prefixed an essay on inscriptions and a note on the Geography, translated by Benjamin Jowett. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1900. 2 volumes, 8°. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Second edition, revised. With the ownership signature of 'Ottoline Cavendish Bentinck. From H.H.A. Feb: 1901' and her pencilled monogram ('MO') dated 1934 in vol. I, and her monogram ('MB') and note 'Given to me in 1901 by H. H. Asquith. Read again April 1934' in vol. II. Pencil marks and notes. In her memoirs, Morrell recorded 'In January 1901 I saw Mr. Asquith several times; he gave me a copy of Thucydides to take with me and read at Syracuse.'
Writing to Ottoline Morrell on 9 March 1916, D. H. Lawrence asked for the loan of a copy of Thucydides, and in April he wrote with thanks and his reaction: 'He is a very splendid and noble writer, with the simplicity and the directness of the most complete culture and the widest consciousness. I salute him.' (Letters, II, pp.572 and 592). Whether it was this copy that he read is unknown.
JOWETT, Benjamin (1817-1893). Autograph note, signed 'B. Jowett' to Philip Morrell, dated 'Ball. Coll. March 8 1891' inviting him to breakfast. With original envelope. After 'three unhappy years at Balliol', Morrell suffered a nervous breakdown in 1891 (Seymour, p.43). (2)
