Half title, publisher's advertisements at end (one or two isolated spots). Original blue cloth (front hinges weak, rear hinges partly detached, head and tail of spine a little bumped, extremities lightly rubbed).
INSCRIBED COPY OF CHURCHILL'S ONLY NOVEL, inscribed by Churchill on half title: "Yours truly / Winston S. Churchill / SS. Etruria. Feb 10. 1901". In January 1901 Churchill was in Winnipeg, Canada on a lecture tour through the United States and Canada about his experiences in the Boer War when he learned of the death of Queen Victoria. On the day of the Queen's funeral, 2 February, he boarded the SS Etruria in New York and arrived in Liverpool on 10 February, the date of the inscription. Only 4 days later, on 14 February, Churchill took his seat in Parliament and only 8 days later, 18 February, he gave his maiden speech. Woods A3(a): "the author's only attempt at full-length fiction". This copy, dated January 1900, is from the second impression of the first American edition, which was the earliest printing of the book. The first English edition was published 10 days after the American edition.
