HORROR AT THE IDEA OF HIS ELDER SON HAVING CHILDREN. Einstein has just received a letter from Mileva on the subject of Hans Albert's proposed marriage [to Frieda Knecht], and shares her anxiety : 'If he expected to have no children with the girl, I would not adopt such an energetic position. But the [genetic] inheritance of our children is so to speak not above reproach. If another burden is placed upon it, then it is really unfortunate'; Einstein proposes then that it would be a 'blessing' if Hans Albert were to consult a doctor at the Burghölzli clinic, adding that he would 'seriously reproach' himself if he did not do everything possible to avoid this 'misfortune': if Hans Albert persists in his course in spite of their advice, he alone will bear the responsibility. Einstein will visit in July; he is pleased to hear Mileva is so delighted with her house.
