A blue and white 'windswept' guan jar, 16th century
of baluster form with a short waisted neck and a slightly everted rim, the main register painted with scholars and attendants by a pavilion, a deer with a sprig in its mouth and a crane standing on rockwork in a fenced garden, below pine and framed by swirling clouds, all between a band of leaping horses above crashing waves and rockwork below and foliate cartouches enclosing birds perched on branches of pomegranate and peach alternating with cloud scrolls, the neck with a ruyi-head border, the base unglazed -- 11 1/8in. (28.3cm.) high.
