T. E. LAWRENCE'S PRESENTATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "H. J. W. from T. E. S[haw]. This little thing is very dirty, because it has been knocking about with me for years: but it is a first-rate book. One of the best things in English, I fancy. T. E. Shaw ... 21.3.28." Lawrence held the work in high esteem. In a letter to Edward Garnett written in 1928 he wrote, "... Do you remember my telling you once that I collected a shelf of 'Titanic' books (those distinguished by greatness of spirit, 'subilimity' as Longinus would call it): and that they were The Karamazovs, Zarathustra, and Moby Dick." Furthermore, this copy is bound by Charles McLeish, the binder Lawrence had chosen to work on the subscriber's edition of Seven Pillars.
