Lot Essay

The novels of Sir Walter Scott had a significant inlfuence on Bonington and his circle. Bonington began producing illustrations for Scott's work from 1816 onwards. Engravings after Bonington were used as the frontispieces of volumes XXVIII and XXI of Scott's Waverley novels, 1831. We are grateful to Patrick Noon for suggesting a date of circa 1821.
