EVERETT LOTS 53-70 The distinguished collection of British pictures, drawings and watercolours formed by Senator and Mrs. Douglas Everett of Canada will be sold by Christie's London in November. Watercolours from the collection will be sold in the present sale, while the oil paintings will be included in The British Picture Sale and The Victorian and Traditionalist Sale both on 22 November. Douglas Everett's interest in British Art began when he was serving as midshipman on secondment from the Royal Canadian Navy, in the battleship HMS Nelson then stationed at Portland in Dorset. During this time, the closing years of World War II, he spent his shore leave in London, visiting museums and scouring auction houses, developing a life-long interest in Britain and its cultural past. The collection includes many great oil paintings by the artists that dominate the British Art Scene of the 18th and 19th Centuries, but it was works on paper that first caught the Everett's attention. The Drawings and Watercolours collection ranges from lively monochromes wooded landscapes by Thomas Gainsborough to jewel-like watercolours of children harvesting by Myles Birket Foster.
