Lot Essay

Callow executed this sketch at a time when he was inspired by the work of fellow artist, Thomas Shotter Boys, N.W.S. (1803-1874). In 1833 the two artists were sharing a studio in the rue de Bouloy (for a note on Boys at this time see lot 88). Callow recalls in his diary of 1832 'thanks to Boys, I became more diligent in making sketches both in pencil and water colours, and many a happy day I spent in making short excursions to Versailles, St Cloud, and Montmartre.'. This present watercolour shows Callow's technical ability both in the draughtsmanship and in the fluid handling of the watercolour.
