Lot Essay

The present drawing relates to the full-length drawing, in reverse, in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, dated 1844. An etching of which was published in The Illustrated London News, 10 May 1845, p. 292. The attribution of the drawing in the National Portrait Gallery was confimed by Charles Martin's son (see 'Portraits of J.M.W. Turner', Turner Studies, vol. 3, no. 1, Abingdon, 1983, pp. 28-9).
