Lot Essay

After serving in the Navy, Mitchell moved to Plymouth where he pursued his career as a landscape and coastal painter. Much of his work is from this area of Britain; however he is also known for his depictions of Derbyshire. He was a highly successful in producing atmospheric effects in his landscapes, as the present watercolour demonstrates.
